First things first - Sara, thanks for reading this, if even once, and thanks for the encouraging words. I really haven't told anyone else about the blog but might. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I'm not looking to write a literary masterpiece. It's just for me to goof around with and have some record. Thanks again, Squirt.
In Wilmington, visiting mom after seeing my gazillionth Springsteen concert (no, Sara, it's not a man crush) and ran 6 yesterday from "home" or rather, my old home. The run was fine after some questionable eating habits on Friday (cheesesteak, hoagie, BBQ in Baltimore and one too many beers). The most interesting thing to me was that the distance between once familiar places seems to have been reduced dramatically. The hill on Wilson Rd. from below Lynnfield up to the pool used to be a bear - long and steep. Now, it's a bump. The hill on Silverside from Green Acres to Carr Rd. used to be steep and LOOOOOOONG. It's not. I wish I could say that it's because I am in such great shape. Nah. It's just that things aren't nearly as big as they used to be. Is Delaware shrinking?
Getting ready for 8. Was gonna go 10 but my calf cramped a bit after the run yesterday. To tell the truth, I feel great and don't know why. Getting up from bed is still a chore, with everything from my lower back down telling me "good morning" in a nasty way but once I get around a bit, things start to get lubed up and I'm ok. The first mile is always ugly, no matter how I stretch and warm up.
Race this Thursday - 5K on the Sprint campus. It's a 3 mile day anyway so I'm not going to bastardize the training plans. It should be interesting to see what happens.

Can't believe this is your first marathon...I think you're sandbagging for an outrageous finish. High school football/track star does first marathon at 54? I'm not buying it. You didn't say anything about the asphalt fumes on Wilson Road. Good luck, old man.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike - I'm reading it. Good luck with the training. My first piece of advice is be flexible within the plan. Think 'week of training' rather than day of training - that way you can trade hard/easy days depending on weather and how you feel. The end result - weekly mileage and other milestones-will be the same. And it will be another attempt to build flexibility into your scenario! Wish I lived closer to train with you for this - which one do you hope to run and when is it? Sue E.
