It remains cold - it's 5 with a wind chill of -9 as I write this. There is just no way that I am going to run in this weather. Seriously, this is nuts. Where is Al Gore when we really need him here in KC?
Sunday was a bomb, from a training perspective. I had every intention of running on the treadmill (see below: weather) and started out on same. Every step was an ache of some other part of the body - knees, ankles, hips, fingers, skin, eyeballs. After three miles of slow progress (9:40/mile), I stepped off and did another half hour on the elliptical. It's not the same but it was a workout nonetheless.
Yesterday was in the pool. I don't go far or fast or long, just steady and slow. It makes me feel good and while I can't count it as a workout, it makes me feel like I am doing something.
After all this training, I'm beginning to believe that working out should be a matter of how you feel, not how someone else tells you to feel. While I am SCHEDULED for a long run, if I don't feel good enough to do a long run, I should be flexible enough to do what my body tells me to do. Right? RIGHT? RIGHT?

Mike, great to hear of your marathon plans. Sounds like your having fun with the training. A worthy goal for a former sprinter...right?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the treadmill should be just fine for training. Someone suggested to me a long time ago that if you set the incline on 1 degree, that would equal running outside. Don't know if that's true, but that's what I've been doing ever since. The treadmill is warm but gets really boring once you hit 8+ miles. I never could do my long runs on the treadmill (but of course I live in FL).
Well, now you know at least 1 other person besides your family has read your blog :)
Take care Mike
