Running and Working Out While Away

Travel for the next few weeks is going to make working out interesting, as it always does. When I was working (apologies to all you working stiffs), working out was always an early morning thing. Usually up before dawn, I would d the fitness center/room/dungeon, dependent on the class of the hotel, and work up a sweat. If I was in a more hospitable climate (Florida, Las Vegas), I would run. I remember vividly running up the strip in Las Vegas at 5am and seeing the hook....errrrrrr, the escorts leaving the hotels. I can also remember working out in small small small Hampton Inn hotel room with just enough room for a treadmill. That's it. Just a treadmill.

But today I find myself in Allentown PA, visiting my mother-in-law. The challenge of isn't the workout itself. I can figure out how, where, and what to do. It's the time commitment, coupled with the massive food intake associated with visiting. Deb and I walked for an hour this morning, something we haven't ever done before. It didn't get the heart rate up like the elliptical would but hey, it was with my wife. She always gets my heart beating faster. I then did 3 quiet miles on a trail that was converted from an old railroad bed. Quiet, peaceful, fresh air. That's what this running thing is all about, right. I really enjoyed it.

Again, today was a run day. Tomorrow, I'll take running off and do something else. We should be at the beach, so maybe I'll use the elliptical. Actually, tomorrow might be an off day. Rest, remember?

Sue, thanks for the article about ITB. I'm thrilled to say that my ITB isn't bothering me. While not doing the exact set of exercises outlined, I am stretching a bit more and have had my alignment checked, resulting in a pair of shoe inserts that seem to have alleviated (or at least corrected for) some of my pronation. Funny, the right side is the same side on which I most severely probate AND have had both ITB and calf problems. You would think that after 45 years of doing this, I might learn. Anyway, thanks for the tip. I really appreciate it.

Tomorrow, lounging on the beach with a cold, fruity drink with am umbrella in it. And crabs. And beach pizza. And.........
